SanMarinoGP: Ferrari wins race 2, Torres the world championship after an incredible finish

Jordi Torres (HP Pons 40)

After a race full of twists and the contact on the last lap between Aegerter and Torres, Matteo Ferrari and the Indonesian E-Racing Gresini team take their first victory of the year on their home track in Misano. The fight for the title of the MotoE ends in the Parc Fermé: Jordi Torres is again the Champion of the MotoE World Cup, ahead of Aegerter and Ferrari.

Race two of 8 laps with sixteen riders at the start due to the forfeit of Alessandro Zaccone and Andrè Pires. At the start Casadei makes good use of his position on the grid and passes in front of the group at the first corner. Behind him is Torres, who takes advantage of the pole position and moves ahead of Aegerter, Granado and Ferrari.
At the Quercia curve, Torres immediately attacks Casadei who resists and keeps the lead of the race. Behind the first two, Aegerter passes Ferrari but the Italian has a better acceleration and overtakes the Swiss at the Curvone. At Carro point, however, Aegerter attacks again Ferrari and passes third, launching himself in pursuit of the first two. Meanwhile Torres passes Casadei in the same curve and takes the lead of the race.

Mattia Casadei and Jordi Torres fighting for the first position

The second lap begins with Torres improving over Casadei while Ferrari takes back third place but Aegerter attacks again and overtakes the Italian at the Tramonto curve. In the meantime, Casadei doesn't give up and stays close to Torres. Behind the former we find sixt riders: Pons followed by Aldeguer, Tulovic, Okubo and Zannoni.
At the start of the third lap Granado immediately attacks Ferrari for fourth place, in the change of direction between the first and second corners. At the Quercia also Pons passes Ferrari which gives him back the overtaking the Spanish rider at the Curvone.
Aegerter at Carro passes Casadei and begins the comeback on Torres, riding below the track record (1:42.961).

In the fourth lap the first three increase the gap on Ferrari that overtakes Granado and is now fourth. The Brazilian has a difficult moment and is passed a few corners later also by Pons.
In the lead, the first two riders both run below the track record, with Torres setting the time of 1:42.850 and Aegerter immediately after setting 1:42.790.
In the same lap Hernandez falls and retires (pilot ok), while Aldeguer is penalized with a long lap penalty.
Aegerter does not loosen the comeback on Torres and in the following lap he marks the time of 1:42.660 while behind him a group of three riders fights for the third position: Casadei, Ferrari and Pons.

Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP)

Three laps to go and, at turn 4, Tulovic falls but he resumes the race. In the meantime, at the curve of Carro, Aegerter is only two tenths behind Torres. The fight for third position, Ferrari overtakes Casadei.
Two laps from the checkered flag and Aegerter begins the attacks for the victory. The first attempt to overtake takes place at the Quercia but the Swiss goes wide and Torres is back in the lead. Same actioin at the next corner, the Tramonto one, but Torres exits better and takes advantage of the best acceleration to pass first at the Curvone.
New curve and new attack by Aegerter, this time at the braking of the Carro; once again Torres crosses and returns to the front.

The last lap begins with Torres and Aegerter in the lead, followed at a distance by Ferrari, Casadei, Pons, Zannoni and Granado.
Torres pushes to the limit to gain a few meters on Aegerter. The Swiss tries a braking at the Tramonto curve but once again Torres crosses and maintains the first position.
The topic of the race takes place at the curve of the Carro, when Aegerter tries a desperate overtaking on Torres. The Swiss's bike moves toward Torres, the rear drifts on one side and hits Torres' front which ends up on the ground.
Aegerter recovers the trajectory to complete the curve and go towards the finish line, passing first under the checkered flag. Behind him Ferrai, Casadei and Pons. Torres gets up and rejoins the track, reaching the finish line aching in one arm due to the fall, in thirteenth position.

MotoE World Cup 2021
The final standings

At this point the race direction investigates Aegerter's maneuver and the action moves to the parc fermé. Aegerter returns celebrating the victory of the race and the championship while Torres is desperate for having lost the second title of the MotoE World Cup. The tension mounts as the minutes pass; Aegerter performs in a burn-out in the pit lane while Sito Pons, protests for the maneuver of the Swiss rider, which he judges to be irregular.
After a few minutes the decision of the race direction arrives: penalty of 38 seconds for Aegerter who thus drops to twelfth place in the order of arrival; victory to Matteo Ferrari in front of Casadei and Pons. Kevin Zannoni, fourth, gets his best result ever in MotoE. Torres remains thirteenth but that's enough for him to win the title of the MotoE World Cup for the second consecutive year .
On Aegerter's face we can read the disappointment for the penalty and the lack of victory as he congratulates Torres for the victory.
The final victory of the MotoE World Cup 2021 goes again to Jordi Torres, second in the standings remains Aegerter while in the fight for third place Matteo Ferrari overtakes Eric Granado.
