In 2022, registrations of mopeds, scooters, motorcycles and electric quadricycles in Italy exceeded 23.000 units, with an increase of almost 60% compared to 2021. Sales in 2022 were driven by government incentives, which will also be paid in 2023 to the extent of 35 million.
Sales of electric mopeds, scooters, motorcycles and quadricycles in Italy in 2022 continue to grow and electric two-wheelers are making their way into urban mobility. Just look at 2018, when the total totaled just over 4.200 vehicles, to read the growth path of this area of individual mobility in the over 23.300 registrations of the year that has just ended. This is what emerges from the study on the 2022 trend of the quadricycle and two-wheel electric vehicle market presented today in Milan by Confindustria ANCMA (National Association of Cycle Motorcycle Accessories).
2022 records a positive sign in all segments and also confirms the preference of private individuals for the use of electric vehicles in the city, thanks also to the sharing offer. All segments are growing: mopeds (+53,3% with 5.904 vehicles put on the road), scooters (+56,9% and 9.896 vehicles registered), motorcycles (540 units and +7,5%) and quadricycles electric (7.043 vehicles and a growth of 74,1%). The percentage of electric vehicles is now worth more than 8% of the overall market, with internal combustion engine vehicles registering 281.351.
What are the best-selling electric scooters in Italy in 2022? In the L1e segment, that of mopeds with a maximum speed of up to 45 km/h equivalent to 50cc with an internal combustion engine, we find the VMOTO SOCO CUx at the top of the sales list. This scooter, adopted by various sharing mobility companies, has registered almost twice as many as the second model in the standings, the NIU N series. In the electric Top 5 we find the ASKOLL ES Series, the PIAGGIO 1 and the LIFAN E4. Overall, registrations of electric mopeds belonging to the L1e segment recorded around 5.904 units, with eight electric models in the overall Top 30 of the moped segment.
There are 9.896 electric scooters equivalent to endothermic 125cc, with the Piaggio 1 Active at the top, the only model to enter the Top 30 of all scooters registered in Italy in 2022.
In terms of market shares, among mopeds we find VmotoSoco in the lead with 20%, followed by Niu (17%) and Askoll (13%). For mopeds, the podium of registrations sees Niu (19%) on the top step, ahead of Piaggio (18%) and Seat (12%). Among the motorcycles in first place we still find VmotoSoco (38%) ahead of Zero Motorcycles (22%).
As regards the distribution on the territory, Rome, Milan and Trento are respectively the three cities with the highest density of electric vehicles, while Catania and Palermo are the provinces where the market has grown the most in percentage terms in the last two years. Southern Italy which also confirms itself as a protagonist in the increase - again between 2020 and 2022 - of the quadricycle market with Palermo, Catania and Naples, which get on the podium of the territories with the best performances. Turin is instead the city where the greatest percentage growth has been witnessed in the motorcycle market, followed by Florence and Palermo, while Catania, Bergamo and Trento take the top three positions for the moped segment.
"Ours is the fastest growing sector in the field of electric mobility, we are facing significant numbers, which - commented the president of ANCMA Paolo Magri - also say a lot about the ability of the companies we represent to produce increasingly innovative vehicles and usable. And which confirm the importance of continuing to support this area to help it reach the maturity it deserves, not only in percentage terms. It is a very interesting moment for two-wheelers: today electric has come to represent just over 8% of the entire market and supports an overall sustainable and advanced thermal offer, which makes our country the leader in sales and production in Europe".
The Ecobonus for electric scooters and motorcycles is renewed in 2023
Purchase incentives certainly contributed to the results of the electricity sector. For most of 2022, electric vehicles took advantage of the eco-incentives that the Italian government made available in the first part of the year and which it renewed in October with another 20 million. At the beginning of December, 7 million euros were still available for the purchase of electric motorcycles and scooters with the state contribution of 30% up to a maximum of 3.000 euros (40% in the event of scrapping and a maximum contribution of 4.000 euros). The funds, uploaded to the portal ecobonus.mise.gov.it, have also been renewed for 2023 and snoo is available to anyone wishing to purchase an electric two-wheeler (e-bikes are currently excluded).
