This weekend, the electric MotoGP series arrives in Misano, for the final round of the 2024 season, the San Marino GP. Only two races separate Hector Garzò from the championship victory, but three other riders are still mathematically in the fight for the championship title. MotoE 2024.

This weekend, the MotoE arrives in Misano for the San Marino GP, the final round of the 2024 season. After fourteen races completed out of a total of sixteen, the 2024 World Championship is led by Hector Garzò (Dynavolt Intact GP) with a significant advantage over a group of three riders determined to challenge him for the lead of the standings until the final corner. The fight for the title had reignited in Assen, with the falls of Mattia Casadei (LCR E-Team) and Kevin Zannoni (Openbank Aspar Team) – the leading duo in the standings on the eve of the Dutch GP – and the excellent performances of Oscar Gutierrez (Axxis-MSI) and Hector Garzò, the main pursuers. In the following round, in Germany, Garzò achieved a fantastic double and, with the 50 points obtained, he moved into the lead of the championship, with an advantage of 25 points over the first of his pursuers, Mattia Casadei.

Precisely the latter, the reigning champion of MotoE, had a poor weekend at Sachsenring, as did the other two title contenders, Kevin Zannoni and Oscar Gutierrez. Alessandro Zaccone (Tech3 E-Racing) was in great form in the middle of the championship and, with the points obtained in the Netherlands and Germany, he rejoined the Top5 in the standings, becoming Garzò's most dangerous opponent. His growth trend, however, was interrupted in Austria and now Zaccone is mathematically excluded from the title fight. The same situation was also for his teammate, Nicholas Spinelli, who had an exceptional start to the season, with three wins in the first four races, but could not maintain the same performance in the subsequent races.
The Austrian round at the Red Bull Ring had started with Oscar Gutierrez on pole and winner of race 1, but the rookie Spanish rider saw his championship hopes vanish in race 2 when he crashed while heading for a fantastic one-two. Despite good points collected by Mattia Casadei and Kevin Zannoni, the actual winner of the Austrian GP was Hector Garzò, who increased his lead in the overall standings with a second place in race 1 and a win in race 2. The Valencian now has a 38-point advantage over Casadei and the 2023 world champion has just 50 points left over the two races in Misano to close the gap. Kevin Zannoni is third in the standings, 44 points behind Garzò, while Gutierrez, in fourth, has a gap of 49 points.

Given the standings situation, it shouldn't be too difficult for Garzò to become MotoE champion at the end of race 1 of the San Marino GP, considering the Dynavolt Intact GP team rider's form and excellent performance last year in Misano. But a margin of uncertainty remains in a category where, in each race, at least ten riders can aim for victory.
If the fight for the championship victory seems almost over in favor of Garzò, there is still a lot of uncertainty for the other two steps of the podium. The fight is narrowed down to three riders: Mattia Casadei, Kevin Zannoni and Oscar Gutierrez. For the first two, there is the advantage of racing on their home track, but Gutierrez has shown several times this year that he is fast even on tracks where he has never raced. For the Spaniard, the test day on Thursday will be very useful, in which the riders of the MotoE will test different Michelin tyres for 2025. Alessandro Zaccone is also not mathematically excluded from the final podium, but it would take a disastrous weekend for his opponents to allow the Tech3 team rider to grab the Top3 in the championship.
The three test sessions scheduled for Thursday will have, as a side effect, the levelling of performances and the compacting of the group of riders of the MotoE and produce an even more heated challenge for victory in the final two races of the season.
For those who want to follow the GP of MotoE in its final round of 2024, qualifying, Race 1 and Race 2 of the MotoE in Misano will be live on motogp.com and for free on the YouTube channel dedicated to the MotoE.
