MotoE 2024: numbers, statistics and curiosities - The MotoE World Championship riders have already completed twelve of the sixteen races that make up the 2024 season. Only the two races at the Red Bull Ring and the two at Misano remain to be completed. In this post, you will find the numbers, statistics, and curiosities of the races that have taken place so far.
MotoE 2024: numbers, statistics and curiosities
Three quarters of the sixteen races scheduled for 2024 have already been run and have provided excitement, twists and turns, and ever-increasing performances. Let's start with the classification, which has so far seen four riders take the lead: Hector Garzò, the current leader, Kevin Zannoni, Mattia Casadei and Nicholas Spinelli. After the first two rounds, at Portimao and Le Mans, it seemed that the fight for the title was restricted to two riders, Casadei and Spinelli, who had shared victories and podiums in the first four races. Spinelli's and Casadei's black weekend in Barcelona had opened the way for Zannoni's comeback, who, thanks to his first win in MotoE, arrived at Mugello as the leader of the standings. The Italian GP brought the reigning world champion, Casadei, back to the top of the standings, a position the Italian held until the last round held before the summer break, the German GP. With the double victory at Sachsering, Garzò has moved to the top of the MotoE classification, with a lead of 25 points over his pursuers.
Up to this point, there has not been a true dominator of the championship; each round has seen different riders as protagonists. Portimao and the Sachsenring were the tracks where Garzò gave his best, while for Spinelli, the Le Mans track was the one where he achieved the best results. Falls often made a difference. Zannoni was the only one to score points in all races, despite the clash with Granado at Assen. Casadei and Garzò have recorded two zeros up to this point, Alessandro Zaccone three, and Spinelli even five. This has meant that the current points average is significantly lower than that needed to win the championship in previous years. The Dynavolt Intact GP team rider is leading the standings with an average points rating of 14,9; Casadei, second, has an average of 14, while Oscar Gutierrez, in his first full season in MotoE, has a value of 13,6. These numbers are significantly lower than the average points of previous years. In 2023 Casadei won with 16,2 points per race, while in 2022, Dominique Aegerter achieved a record average of 18,9. These numbers tell us that we are seeing a very balanced season in which, with four races to go, five riders are fighting for the championship title. The opposite and complementary interpretation, however, is that this year, there is a lack of a reference rider, the man to beat, who everyone else wants to challenge as soon as the red light goes out. It's up to you to choose which version you prefer.
Who has been the most victorious rider so far in the 2024 World Championship?
We answer this question with two names: Nicholas Spinelli and Hector Garzò. The former won three of the first four races, one at Portimao and two at Le Mans. The second has won three of the last four races, one at Assen and the two races at Sachsenring. One win away is Mattia Casadei, who thus reaches a quota of nine victories in MotoE, and Kevin Zannoni, for the first time on the top step of the podium in the electric MotoGP class. Alessandro Zaccone, once again winner of a race after Jerez 2021, and rookie Oscar Gutierrez are also on a share of one. Gutierrez himself is the main surprise of 2024: the Axxis-MSi team rider won one race in his debut season and obtained three second and two third places. Miquel Pons also won a race in his debut year in MotoE, in Barcelona, but Gutierrez is doing something more. The Spanish rider has not simply made an exploit in one race but has been a constant protagonist, so much so that with four races to go, Gutierrez is third in the overall standings, 29 points behind Garzo, and is still fully in the fight for the 2024 championship victory.
Overperformance and underperformance
Who has performed above and below expectations up to this point in the season? Among the best overperformers, we certainly include Kevin Zannoni, fighting for the title for the first time, Oscar Gutierrez, whom we have already mentioned, and Hector Garzò, finally fast and solid if we forget the weekend at Le Mans.
The list of underperformers is longer. Let's start with Matteo Ferrari, winner of the 2019 title, who has won ten races and achieved twenty podiums in his career. However, none of these were achieved in 2024. This year Ferrari was unable to find the feeling with his Ducati V21L equipped with new Michelin tyres. Things improved a little in the last few races, when Ferrari managed to take fourth place in Germany. The weekend at the Sachsering showed a step forward both in terms of lap time and race pace and perhaps the end of the tunnel for Ferrari is not that far away. Another rider who is taking home less than he could is Eric Granado, currently in thirteenth position in the standings, 105 points behind Garzò. For years, the Brazilian rider of the LCR team was the fastest rider in the MotoE; only the lack of consistency in his performances prevented him from winning the category title. This year, however, there is something more missing. Even without the bad luck of the weekend at Sachsenring, Granado was less brilliant than usual, achieving only two podiums. Not much compared to the eleven victories, twenty podiums and thirteen fastest laps achieved in his MotoE career. A positive note for 2024 is the two pole positions of the Brazilian.
Two other riders who, in our opinion, are in the underperformer category are Jordi Torres and Nicholas Spinelli. The former has been struggling since the start of the season to find the speed, not only of his opponents but also that he had in 2023. Comparing the telemetries of the two years, Torres said that on more than one occasion he is slower than last year, an anomaly given that the bike has changed very little compared to a year ago. The second, Spinelli, showed great things and made big mistakes. Last year, the Italian rider was the author of an excellent progression culminating with his first victory in MotoE in Misano, in the closing race of 2023. Spinelli then started 2024 by winning three out of four races in MotoE and achieving a surprising success in the Superbike World Championship at Assen, when he raced to replace the injured Danilo Petrucci. From then on, however, things changed, with the double zeros in Barcelona and Assen and the lackluster performance at Mugello. In partial defence of Spinelli, it must be said that, in the first fall in Barcelona, the Tech3 team rider suffered a hand injury, which probably affected him in subsequent races. The two podiums at the Sachsenring have brought Spinelli back to his early season levels and put him forward for a place on the final podium of the 2024 MotoE season.
And the teams? Currently, the Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE team is at the top of the standings, with 264 points, ten ahead of the Tech3 E-Racing team (254), while in third place, we find the Openbank Aspar Team with 251 points. The team that has achieved the most successes so far is Tech3, with four victories, while Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE is at three. The Openbank Aspar team and the LCR E-Team are at two victories each while Axxis-MSi, at its debut in MotoE, achieved a victory. These are the only teams that have obtained at least one podium, while Gresini, Sic58, Forward and Aruba are still without podiums or victories.
One last note before closing this post on numbers, statistics and curiosities of MotoE 2024. On each of the tracks on which MotoE has raced so far, with the exception of Portimao, which is new for 2024, the riders of the MotoE were always faster than the previous track record. At Le Mans, four riders broke the lap record set in 2023, in Barcelona there were seven, at Mugello five and at Assen and the Sachsering twelve. An index of how the category is increasingly faster and more competitive year after year.
