San Marino GP of MotoE - Matteo Ferrari wins race 2 at the Misano World Circuit ahead of Matteo Casadei and Eric Granado. Ferrari wins the sixth race out of eight disputed in MotoE at Misano and achieves the third position in the final classification.
Matteo Ferrari wins race 2 of the San Marino GP at the Misano World Circuit, the last race of the MotoE World Cup 2022. Dominique Aegerter has already won the title of the category thanks to the second position in Saturday's race while Eric Granado is second in the standings. The only challenge which is still open is that between Matteo Ferrari and Mattia Casadei for the third step of the podium of the classification. The two home riders are separated by 1,5 points in the standings.
At the green light, as often happened this year, it is Mattia Casadei who has the best start and takes the leadership of the group. Behind him, Dominique Aegerter is second ahead of Eric Granado. Matteo Ferrari, on the other hand, has a bad start and is in seventh position at the first corner. In two curves, the Felo Gresini Racing rider recovers two positions and take the slipstream of Jordi Torres, fourth. At the end of the first lap the top ten riders are: Casadei, Aegerter, Granado, Torres, Ferrari, Pons, Canepa, Escrig, Okubo and Zannoni.
The race does not seem like the normal race of the MotoE made of overtakings and counter-overtakings. In the lead Casadei and Aegerter gain meters over Granado, who improves again Torres and Ferrari. Casadei is very fast, especially in the first sector, with Aegerter who appears to be struggling to keep up with the Italian rider. At the end of the third lap, the first two have 8 tenths of an advantage over Granado who has the same advantage over Torres and Ferrari. Ferrari, after the difficulties in the first two laps, does the fastest lap and overtakes Torres, moving to fourth position, one second behind Granado.
The victory seems to be a match between Casadei, who leads the race, and Aegerter, who follows him, studying the trajectories and lines of the Italian rider.
With four laps to go, Aegerter attacks and overtakes Casadei at the Carro corner while Granado takes advantage of the fight between the two to recover tenths on the leading duo. Casadei makes a few curves behind Aegerter before attacking him at the Quercia curve. The rider of the Pons Racing 40 team recovers the leadership of the race but the fight with Aegerter allowed Granado to close the gap with the first two. Matteo Ferrari also takes advantage of the free track in front of him and with two very fast laps reaches the leading trio.
Ferrari knows that, in order to take third place in the overall standings, he must reach the finish line in front of Casadei, so he wastes no time and overtakes Eric Granado at the Carro corner, with two laps to go.
The last lap starts with Casadei in the lead followed closely by Aegerter, Ferrari and Granado. Aegerter tries to overtake Casadei between turns 1 and 2 but finds no space and is forced to go wide. Ferrari and Granado take advantage of this and overtake the new world champion who rejoins the track in fourth position.
The fight for the victory of the race is now the fight for third place in the overall standings. At the first point for overtaking, the Quercia curve, Casadei closes the spaces well and does not allow Ferrari to get close to attempt an attack. Also at the Tramonto corner, Casadei sets a defensive line but it is Ferrari who has the best outgoing trajectory, gaining speed on the straight towards the Curvone. Precisely in the fastest and most demanding curves of the Misano track, Ferrari comes out of Casadei's slipstream and is extremely close to him in the curves that lead to the braking of the Carro. Ferrari and Casadei are side by side but it is Ferrari who has the advantage of the line at the entrance to the curve of Carro.
With two curves to go, Casadei tries a last attempt at the last corner: the rider of the Pons team overtakes Ferrari but fails to close the line and goes wide on the curb, leaving space for Ferrari who crosses the line and exits faster towards the finish line. The Gresini team rider thus passes first under the checkered flag, taking his second victory of the season and sixth in his career at Misano. In addition to the victory, Ferrari wins the third position in the overall standings. Behind Ferrari and Casadei, in order: Granado, Aegerter, Torres, Canepa, Pons, Escrig, Okubo. Kevin Zannoni closes the top 10. Fall without consequences for Maria Herrera.
This is the final race of the fourth season of the MotoE World Cup, the last in which Energica Motor Company is the sole supplier. From next year, Ducati will supply the 18 bikes for the MotoGP electric class.
