The data acquisition system MotoE

The data acquisition system's main function is to record the signals of all the sensors installed on the motorbike during each session on track. When the rider returns to the pits, the team's engineer downloads the recorded data set and analyzes it. It is thus possible to see the sectors of the track where the rider can improve, the suspensions' behaviour, or how the tyres' pressure and temperature change.

The elements that are included in the system are: the CAN signal transmission channel (Controlled Area Network acronym), the data collection unit (Data Logger), the inertial IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) platform, the TPMS tire monitoring system (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), the VCU (Vehicle Control Unit) motorcycle control system, the transponder and the TV module.
We have created an infographic to view the system illustrated by Paolo Colombo, the MotoE project manager at Dell'Orto, the technical parnter of the championship for the data acquisition system.

When the bike returns to the pits, among the main data that the technicians of the teams can analyze are: the speed of the bike, the number of laps, the level of battery charge, the amount of energy regenerated under braking, the lean angle of the bike, the dynamics of the fork and the mono-shock, the use of the brakes, the temperature and the pressure of the tyres, the lap and the intermediates times. As you can see, most of the available data are related to the chassis. This is because the championship organization has decided to limit the number of variables available to the teams with the aim of having a more homogeneous competition.
The data visualization software is the DoData, developed directly by Dell'Orto. Data transfer from the Data Logger occurs when the bike returns to the pits while real-time transmission is prohibited by the Dorna regulation.

Starting from the 2019 season, Dell'Orto has developed some processing of the signals coming from the sensors installed on the bike. The most important of these is the extent of the rear tire slip. The calculation is made using the rotation speed data of the front and rear tires, the size and geometric profile of the two tires and the inclination angle of the motorcycle.
