This week, the MotoGP electric series arrives at the Red Bull Ring, for the Austrian GP. After twelve races, Hector Garzò is leading the standings, with five riders chasing him for the 2024 MotoE Championship title.
This weekend, the MotoE arrives at the Red Bull Ring for the Austrian GP, the seventh round of the 2024 season. Twelve races have been completed and four remain to the end of the season. At the top of the 2024 World Championship we find Hector Garzò (Dynavolt Intact GP) with a group of five riders behind him determined to take the leadership of the classification. The fight for the title was rekindled in Assen, with the crashes of Mattia Casadei (LCR E-Team) and Kevin Zannoni (Openbank Aspar Team) - the leading duo in the standings - and the excellent performances of Oscar Gutierrez (Axxis- MSI) and Hector Garzò, the main pursuers. In the following round, in Germany, Garzò achieved a fantastic double and, with the 50 points obtained, moved into the lead of the championship, with a 25 point advantage over the first of his pursuers, Mattia Casadei.
Precisely the latter, the reigning champion of MotoE, had an unprofitable weekend at Sachsering, as did the other two title contenders, Kevin Zannoni and Oscar Gutierrez. The one who is in excellent form in this second part of the championship is Alessandro Zaccone (Tech3 E-Racing) who, with the points obtained in The Netherlands and Germany, has regained the Top5 in the standings and represents the most insidious opponent for Garzò.
Up to this point, there has not been a true dominator of the championship, each round has seen different riders as protagonists. Portimao and the Sachsenring were the tracks where Garzò gave his best, while for Spinelli the Le Mans track was the one where he achieved the best results. Falls often made a difference. Zannoni was the only one to score points in all races, despite the accident with Granado at Assen. Casadei and Garzò have recorded two zeros up to this point, Alessandro Zaccone three while Spinelli even five. This has meant that the current points average is significantly lower than that needed to win the championship in previous years. The Dynavolt Intact GP team rider is leading the standings with an average points rating of 14,9; Casadei, second, has an average of 14 while Oscar Gutierrez, in his first full season in MotoE, has a figure of 13,6. These numbers are significantly lower than the average points of previous years. In 2023 Casadei won with 16,2 points per game while in 2022 Dominique Aegerter achieved a record average of 18,9.
But let's get back to talking about the Austrian GP. On this track, last year, Mattia Casadei achieved a fantastic one-two while Matteo Ferrari had a terrible weekend and had to abandon his hopes of winning the 2023 title. This year, if Garzò manages to repeat the perfect weekend at the Sachsenring and should his pursuers score few points, the Valencian rider could get the mathematical victory of the championship at the end of race 2. The last round of the year, in Misano, would therefore become the scene of the fight for the other two positions on the podium. Although it is possible, it is quite unlikely that Garzò will become champion at the Red Bull Ring, given the number and level of his pursuers. In all editions of MotoE, the winner was decided in the last round of the championship, in Valencia in 2019, at Le Mans in 2020 and at Misano in 2021, 2022 and 2023 and it is very likely that this year too Misano will be the scene of the final battler for the title of the MotoGP electric class.
Meanwhile, for those who want to follow the GP of MotoE at the Red Bull Ring, qualifying, Race 1 and Race 2 of the MotoE in Austria will be live on motogp.com and for free on the MtooE YouTube channel.
