Italian GP of the MotoE - Aegerter wins race 1 at Mugello in front of Ferrari and Granado. On the Italian circuit, the Swiss driver gets his second win of the season in MotoE. After Jerez Ferrari and Granado return to the podium.
On the Mugello circuit, Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP) won the first race of the Italian GP of MotoE World Cup 2022. The Swiss driver reached the finish line first followed by Matteo Ferrari (FELO Gresini Racing MotoE) and Eric Granado (LCR E-team). Aegerter took his second win of the season in MotoE.
Before the start a few drops of rain fell, which is why the race was declared wet and shortened from six to five laps.
At the start the fastest was Aegerter but under braking at the San Donato (turn 1), Kevin Zannoni (Sic58 Squadra Corse) overtakes him taking the lead, followed by Matteo Ferrari. The Gresini team rider tries to overtake Zannoni at the Casanova-Savelli curve but the attack fails. Ferrari tries again at Arrabbiata 2, passes inside Zannoni and takes the lead of the race.
Meanwhile, behind the first two, Aegerter, Canepa, and Granado are fighting each other for the provisional third place. At the Scarperia braking, Granado hits Canepa; the mudguards of the two bikes fly awayk but both riders continue their race regularly.
At the Correntaio braking, Aegerter manages to get back in the lead followed by Zannoni, Ferrari, Granado and Canepa. Ferrari does not want to give space to the Swiss rider so he attacks and overtakes Zannoni at the Bucine curve, thus taking the second position.
At the first pass under the finish line, Aegerter precedes Ferrari, Granado, and Canepa while Zannoni loses ground probably due to a mistake at Bucine.
At the braking of turn 1, Aegerter keeps the lead on Ferrari but both are overtaken by Granado in the first two chichanes; the Brazilian rider of the LCR team thus leads the race. Behind the first group, Marc Alcoba (Openbank Aspar Team) is fifth thanks to an excellent start to the race.
At the last corner Canepa brakes very hard and overtakes Ferrari but the Gresini team rider exits from the Bucine faster and passes his compatriot back on the straight.
At the braking at the end of the straight, Canepa is also overtaken by Alcoba with the Spanish rookie who finds himself in fourth position for the first time in a race of the MotoE.
The third lap of the race starts with Grando and Aegerter in front and Ferrari close to them. Behind them are Alcoba, Mantovani, Canepa, and Casadei. At the Scarperia braking, Aegerter attacks Granado and passes him while Ferrari also passes Alcoba at the Bucine curve and moves to third position at the start of the fourth lap.
The long Mugello straight and the slipstreams make Aegerter, Granado, Ferrari and Alcoba arrive side by side at the braking of the San Donato. It is Ferrari who manages to get out of turn 1 first in front of the surprising Alcoba and Granado. The Italian rider tries to gain meters over his opponents but Granado reply to Ferrari's attempt to escape and immediately moves behind him, overtaking Alcoba. Fourth and fifth are Aegerter and Mantovani while behind them Casadei and Canepa are fighting for sixth place.
The last lap begins with all the leading riders side by side in the long straight of the Mugello. Dominique Aegerter is the first to enter turn 1 ahead of Ferrari, Granado and Mantovani. The lead positions did not change in the first part of the lap while at Casanova Savelli curve, Casadei overtakes Alcoba and moves to fifth position. The positions do not change in the braking of Correntaio and Bucine and the positions seem destined not to change until the finish line.
At the exit of the last corner, however, Granado loses grip at the rear and allows Mantovani to get in the slipstream of the long straight before the finish line.
Thanks to a last fastest lap, Aegerter passes first under the checkered flag, followed closely by Matteo Ferrari. Behind them, Mantovani joins Grando and passes him across the finish line, achieveing his first podium in MotoE by seven thousandths.
Mantovani's podium was then canceled due to an irregularity in the pressure of his tires, which led to the disqualification of the WithU GRT RNF team rider MotoE.
Third became Eric Granado ahead of Mattia Casadei, Marc Alcoba (best rookie of the day), Niccolò Canepa, Miquel Pons, Kevin Zannoni and Hector Garzò. Kevin Manfredi closes the Top 10.
For Aegerter it is the second victory of the season while Ferrari returns to the podium after Race 1 in Jerez.
In the overall classification Aegerter is always first with 103 points, ahead of Eric Granado (86 points) and Mattia Casadei (74 points).
Tomorrow at 15:30 the start of Race 2 with the same starting grid.
